Curved lines are good way to create a more natural setting, but can also create a more grotesque and artificial appearance. However, nature only works in curves, so creating curved lines are going to look much more natural than creating straight lines, as these are not found in nature. It takes a lot of efforts to make straight lines look natural. However, straight lines can be used. It would be hard to find any outdoor garden setting where artificial means are used. This often means using straight lines over curved lines.
This is often most true for paths and driveways. These ideally, should feature curved lines, unless there is a particularly reason why a curved line is not able to be used. It is better to use a straight line than to create an unattractive curve. Curves can be good or bad; it is not just a simple question of whether to make a pathway curved or straight. Often a curved line is used, but it may be defective, creating an unnatural look. In this case, a straight line, even unnatural, would have looked better.
The creation of winding and meandering garden path is not a good idea, no matter how artistic it may seem. These are very unnatural and senseless. The point to any path is that it should have a purpose, it should have a clear reason for the beginning and a clear end.
If the path holds a grouping of trees or a hill, then you have a natural reason for a curve. Placing objects into these curves is pointless. Adding a flowerbed to the curve of a path is artificial and not a good idea. Do not create a curve in a path just for adding decorative items, it is better just to make it straight and shorter. If the pathway is a particular distance, then using a double curve path adds a pleasant touch. Allow it to curve in one direction and then the next. This will move away from the unnatural straight line as well as create a variety of views. This creates a line of beauty, so long as it is not overdone.
Adding a grouping of trees to your setting will bring a natural touch as well. Trees, in nature, are always found in clusters. Trees are not planted in straight rows. Planting an oak is a strong choice, as it will grow to be a large tree. As this tree reaches maturity and spreads it branches. And underneath, will grow a whole new generation of oaks. Other tree species develop in much the same way. This is why trees grow in groupings, and not in rows.
At this point, you may consider adding a fountain. Although unnatural, you can find outdoor fountains that will blend with your garden setting, adding the delightful feature of water to your garden setting. If you choose wisely, it may even appear as if it grew right out of the ground.
