How to Propagate your Japanese Garden

The best time to plant or transplant your miniature garden depends on where the garden is.  If you have an indoor garden or the plants are in a greenhouse, they can be transplanted to an indoor garden anytime. It is always best to avoid mid-summer when transplanting anywhere. If you are a biginner it is best to stick with the typical planting seasons, which will vary depending on the plant and its confitions.

The best time to plant or transplant is generally in the cool early autumn or late spring. At this time the frost should be done, and should not affect your plants when they are at the most risk. Here is a guideline for specific plants:

  • rock plants and alpine should be planted during spring or autumn
  • bulbs should be planted in august t or October
  • Succulents should be planted in spring
  • Roses will grow best in early spring or autumn
  • Pines, Cypress, and Spruce should be planted in autumn
  • Conifers should be in autumn or spring

If you are in a more temperate climate, the growing season can be extended into the winter months.

Propagation
Propagation involves increasing the rate of birth for certain plants. This procedure can be profitable. It is interesting tasks to perform, as well as a money saving technique, allowing you more plants without having to spend more money. You can create new plants by taking the seed or cuttings from on healthy plant, caring for it closely, until its own roots begin to develop. Propagation is easy for most plants, but some require much more care in the nursery phase.

Stages of Propagations:
There are three main stages:

  1. Seeds- Seeds can be collected from mature plants or bought. You can also take  the pips, stones a seeds from cherry, orange, apple or conifer trees as well, seeding them in compost when they are ripe. Soak the seeds for 24 hours to help germination along. Sow the seeds at a depth according to the natural growth and size of the plant.Make sure to not plant the seeds to close together. Large seeds will need to be planted deeper and farther apart then smaller seeds which can be more shallow and closer. If you have tiny seeds that are barely visible, just sprinkle them over the ground.
