Selecting Flowers for Spring Planting

There are certain types of flowers that you will find to complement your landscape best during the spring weather. We've compiled a list of the fountains and gathered some information about each to educate you on which you should choose when visting your local nursey this spring.

Hyacinth:
This small flower is often given at Easter as a gift or used for decoration. There are many varieties of the hyacinth and they come in a wide array of colors as well. The flower is a dense spike of flowers that is very fragrant. The hyacinths need to be mildly watered and should be in indirect sunlight.

Daffodil:
This springtime favorite comes in a wide variety of types, shapes and sizes. All of the species have a central bell surrounded by six floral leaves. The flower is also called the “Narcissus”, named after greek folklore of a youth you was so vain that he could not stop staring at his reflection, so he died, and the gods turned him into the flower.

Tulip:
The tulip is a perennial flower that is grown from a bulb. They are popular grown in flower garden or in containers or pots. Most species will only produce one flower per stem that creates a cup shape, and comes in a wide variety of colors. Tulips prefer to be grown in full sun, and need well drained soil to thrive.

Crocus:
The Crocus is a great flower for the spring flower gardens. It is easy to grow and requires little attention. These flowers are the very first to pop up after the ground has thawed out. They enjoy water in the spring and fall, but during the summer be careful not to overwater them.

Iris:
The Iris will bloom later on in the Spring, and they are perennials. The Iris comes in many different colors, and they also have stunning foliage that adds to the general beauty of the plant. The Iris should have at least a half day of sun and they need to be planted in soil with good drainage. They will also need to be thinned from time to time.

Creeping Phlox:
This super hardy plant is essential for any springtime flower bed. The Phlox needs to be planted in full sun, and it can typically handle some afternoon shade. They should be planted before the last frost in spring. The flowers produced are small creeping clusters. The flowers come in shades like reds, whites, blues, lavenders, and pinks.

Mandevilla:
Mandevilla’s are stunning flowers that can be beautifully trained to climb up a wall or trellis, creating a flowering picture of beauty with their leafy green foliage. The flowers come in colors like white, pink, yellow, and reds. The color and fragrance will change depending on the species of the flower. This plant is perfect for use during the summer, but will die once the first frost hits. This is a fast growing flowering plant that will also attract beautiful butterflies.

Coneflower:
The Coneflower is a beautiful flower that will add bright and cheerful color to your garden setting. These flowers feature pink and purplish blooms with coppery centers.  The flowers typically grow to two feet tall with inches that are four inches across.

Lavender:
Lavender is a staple spring flower. They offer a wonderful fragrance that will waft through your garden setting. They can also be cut and placed in sachets or potpourri. The deep purple flowers will stand out in the garden setting, creating a stunning focal point. These flowers can grow well in small spaces in one compact form.
